Man found dead in Mahiga Creek

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – A 45-year-old man was spotted floating dead yesterday morning in Mahiga Creek in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

Senior Police Officer 2 Remegio Arciaga of the Subangdaku Police Station identified the dead body as that of Victor Madaiton, married, of Sitio Univille in Barangay Kasambagan, Cebu City.

Arciaga said it was the nephew of the victim and his brother who identified the body after they visited the police station yesterday morning.

A certain Ronnie Zuniga, a resident of Sitio Mahayag in Subangdaku, first discovered the victim's body.

Zuniga told homicide investigators that he went fishing yesterday morning at the pier area near the Cebu International Port. On his way home, he then found the said man floating so he immediately reported the incident to the police.

Arciaga said according to the brother of the victim, during the heavy rainslast Monday, they received information from their neighbors that a person jumped into the Mahiga Creek but they just ignored it as they did not expect that it was their brother.

They only started to get bothered after the victim failed to go home last Monday evening. They searched for the victim but he could no longer be found.

The sibling also said the victim has long been suffering from "nervous breakdown" and they believed it was the reason why he jumped to the creek and was washed away by floodwaters towards the CIP area.
