Mandaue hears tricycle fare rollback proposal today

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Committee on Transportation and Communication and the Committee on Laws of the Mandaue City Council will be calling for a public hearing today with regard to the proposed fare reduction of tricycles for hire.

City councilor Elstone Dabon, chairman of the transportation committee, said they have invited all the operators and presidents of tricycle drivers in the city to attend the public hearing at 9 a.m. today at the session hall of the Mandaue City Hall.

In today’s public hearing, operators and tricycle drivers will be informed of the proposed amended ordinance reducing the minimum passenger fare for tricycles in the city from P8 to P7.

In his draft ordinance, Dabon said last January 9, 2015, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board issued an order to decrease the minimum fare rate for public utility jeepneys in Central Visayas from P7.50 to P7.

Dabon said the series of rollbacks in the fuel and petroleum products cannot be ignored, and this also warrants the review of the existing fare rates to correspond to the present situation.

The public hearing is needed before the City Council could approve the proposed ordinance for its second and final readings.

Once the said ordinance will be approved, the current P8 minimum fare for tricycles plying the streets of Mandaue City will be reduced to P7 with an additional P1 for every succeeding kilometer.

Senior citizens, persons with disabilities and students will be charged P6 minimum fare, provided that they can present identification.  (FREEMAN)
