CEBU, Philippines - As part of its continuous effort to increase public awareness and encourage a proactive approach to fire safety, the Talisay City Fire Department has lined up various fire prevention activities as the nation marks the observance of Fire Prevention Month this March.

Talisay City Fire Chief Antonio Ortiz, in yesterday’s press conference, called on the public to observe fire prevention month the aim of which is to instill in the minds of people the importance of fire prevention and help people to be fire conscious.

This year’s observance of the fire prevention month is dubbed “Sunog at Sakuna ay Paghandaan, Kalikasan ay Pangalagaan nang Matamasa ang Pag-unland ng Bayan.”

March was declared as Fire Prevention Month because of the alarming increase in fire incidents nationwide being the hottest month of the year.

Ortiz said that from January to February 20, the city registered four fire incidents with one dead.

BFP statistics reveal that most of affected in structural fires are residential areas.

He said the fires in the city for the last 10 years were caused by electrical faulty wiring.

“Electrical fires are mostly caused by sub-standard electrical installations, substandard electrical components or devices used, short circuit, and overloading,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz said using standard electrical wires for home wiring installation is the only way to avoid electrical fires.

There are 31 establishments that undergo fire drills and safety training.

Ortiz said that the BFP continuously conducts information dissemination to the public on fire prevention. (FREEMAN)
