CEBU, Philippines - A security guard hurt himself last Monday when his allegedly defective service firearm went off by itself, the bullet going through his knee.

Police said Michael Roxas, who was on his first day of work as a security guard at CSK Trading, a truck-for-sale store, sat down at around 3 p.m. when his firearm, which was in the holster, suddenly went off.

The bullet went through his knee.

He sought help from the laborers of the establishment and taken to the hospital.

SPO1 Ruth Violango of the Homicide Section said the guard, who is now stable, claimed he only found out right after the incident that the firearm was defective.

“Mao’y iyang alegasyon na defective daw ang armas. Wa pa g’yud daw ‘to niya tangtanga sa iyang holster,” Violango said.

The police officer said the firearm cannot be found.

Roxas said he had turned over the firearm to the agency’s operations manager, Anecito Tony Gabatanya, who then allegedly turned it over to the agency’s owner, Dale Labra.

“If wala sila’y ikapakita na lisensya sa maong armas, ma-question g’yud sila,” Violango said.

Meanwhile, a suspected illegal drug user was shot dead while walking along sitio Ermita Proper, barangay Ermita at past 8 p.m. last Monday.

Rico Aman, of barangay Tinago, sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigation showed Aman was walking when bursts of gunfire were heard.

Residents found Aman sprawled on the ground, with blood oozing from his head.

Responding barangay tanods took Aman to the Cebu City Medical Center.

Violango said they are still verifying the motive behind the attack but believed that the incident was drug-related.

“Posible g’yud na nga drogas kay nganong naabot man siya didto, wala man siya mailhi didto. Ingon ana ra ba g’yud na,” she said.

Earlier that same day, 24-year-old Niño delos Reyes, a suspected drug pusher, was shot dead by two unidentified men in barangay Duljo-Fatima.  (FREEMAN)
