Lapu-Lapu sanggunian declares November 18 as youth day

- Jose P. Sollano -

CEBU, Philippines - The Lapu-Lapu City council has approved a resolution which declares November 18 as Youth Day in the city to coincide with the holding of the Garbo sa Lapu-Lapu Festival this year.

This resolution supports the resolution adopted by the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation in Lapu-Lapu City headed by its president, Frances Nicole Balao.

The holding of the Garbo sa Lapu-Lapu Festival is a joint project of the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation and the Association of Barangay Councils in the city.

"Garbo" is one of the highlights of the city fiesta celebration on November 20-21 in honor of Virgen dela Regla.

The festival is a colorful parade of floats with dancing contingents, depicting the various products and assets of every barangay, conceptualized to attract tourists and to depict and enhance the forgotten culture, products and assets of the city.

This will be a major project of the City Government of Lapu-Lapu in supporting the efforts of the city and the national government in highlighting tourism as well as provide an opportune time to showcase the residents' artistic and creative skills.

A separate resolution was also approved by the city council which requests the Department of Education in Lapu-Lapu to declare no classes for both private and public schools on November 18 to give time to students and teachers to witness the presentation.

The council has also asked DepEd officials to set the day when students can attend classes to make up for the holiday.

Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president Leo Mercado said the festival is one of Lapu-Lapu City's efforts to promote local tourism.

Former Lapu-Lapu City mayor now Congressman Arturo Radaza introduced the festival in 2000 in coordination with the ABC, Sangguniang Kabataan, and Fiesta Executive Committee at the time chaired by then barangay Mactan captain now Mayor Paz Radaza.

According to Mercado, the Garbo gives different barangays the chance to promote their products and beautiful places.

He said it is different from other festivals in the country.

The best decorated and most symbolic floats with dancing contingents from barangay councils and Sangguniang Kabataan of the 30 barangays in the city will receive awards.  (FREEMAN)
