PNP orders health safeguards for cops in Kanlaon

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police has ordered all PNP units deployed near the restive Mt. Kanlaon to implement strict health safeguards, as field personnel are exposed to volcanic haze while performing public safety and security operations.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. directed regional and provincial commanders to monitor their personnel daily and immediately refer officers showing respiratory symptoms for medical evaluation.
The directive follows a moderate explosive eruption at Mt. Kanlaon on July 9, which prompted the Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas to warn against deteriorating air quality.
The volcanic haze, which reached some areas in Cebu, triggered panic-buying of N95 face masks.
“The safety of our personnel is our priority. I have directed all police commanders in affected areas to ensure that officers assigned to outdoor duties are provided with appropriate protective equipment, including N95 masks whenever necessary,” Nartatez said in a statement.
He reminded police frontliners to shield themselves from toxic emissions while remaining ready to respond to the needs of affected communities.
“They should minimize unnecessary exposure to volcanic haze and strictly follow the advisories issued by the Department of Health, PAGASA and local authorities,” Nartatez said.
“While carrying out your mission, never compromise your own safety. Wear the proper protective gear and remain vigilant,” he added.
