MANILA, Philippines —  A newly constructed footbridge along Visayas Avenue in Quezon City was opened yesterday to address pedestrian safety concerns, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said.

Data from the MMDA showed that 35,896 motorists use the thoroughfare, with an average of 1,655 pedestrians crossing the area daily.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said the construction of the footbridge was in response to a road crash incident involving a teacher in 2024.

“We know that some motorists do not follow traffic rules. Not all motorists yield for pedestrians crossing the road,” Artes said. “This footbridge will provide a safe facility for students, teachers and residents.”

The pedestrian footbridge is equipped with roofing and lights.

“In Quezon City, we believe that the most important infrastructure projects are those that save lives,” city administrator Michael Victor Alimurung said, thanking the MMDA for the initiative.
