Pagasa has new chief

President Arroyo has appointed a new director for the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

This came after the resignation of Pagasa’s acting director Martin Rellin, who is migrating to Canada with his family.

Dr. Prisco Nilo, who assumed the position yesterday, is the third director of Pagasa.

Prior to his appointment, Nilo was Pagasa’s deputy director for operations and services.

He also served as officer-in-charge of Pagasa from April 2006 to January this year.

Nilo, 51, joined the weather bureau in March 1984 as a meteorologist, then became chief of the weather forecasting division in 1995.

He graduated from the Central Mindanao State University in 1978 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering.

He finished his Master’s and Ph.D in Meteorology at the University of the Philippines in 1989 and 1995, respectively.   – Helen Flores
