Removal of Panitikan and Filipino as core college subjects

Tanggol Wika sends a protest letter to Supreme Court Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin urging the high court to rethink its decision to remove Panitikan and Filipino as core college subjects.
The group says language issues are a matter of public interest.
"This case involves the survival of our very own national language, the people's language, what one framer of our Constitution calls as '... more than simply a cultural marker, a national language serving as a communication system across diverse ethno-linguistic groups and classes could facilitate the unification and empowerment of our people.'"
Although it has no legal effect, the group hopes that the SC will reflect on the contents of the protest letter.
Teachers' group ACT-Philippines expresses condemnation of the Supreme Court decision to remove Filipino and Philippine literature as mandatory subjects in college which it says are more meaningful in instilling patriotism than the ROTC.
The SC en banc stood by its October 9 ruling, saying petitioners failed to present substantive new arguments that would have swayed justices to change their opinion.
The SC ruled last October that the Commission on Higher Education memorandum reducing the required general education curriculum to a minimum of 36 units was valid and that Filipino and Panitikan are no longer core subjects.
