CEBU, Philippines — Over 3,000 aspiring athletes are expected to take part in this year’s Summer Grassroots Sports Training Program spearheaded by Cebu City Sports Commission which will begin today at selected public school gyms.

Compared to last year, CCSC chairman Edward Hayco said the number of participants has been doubled this time mainly because of their extensive grassroots development program.

The multi-event undertaking offers basketball, archery, air rifle, arnis, badminton, beach volleyball, boxing, chess, muay thai, dancesports, futsal, karatedo, lawn tennis, pencak silat, scrabble, sepak takraw, softball/baseball, table tennis, taekwondo, touch rugby, track and field, volleyball, weightlifting, wushu, and gymnastics.

“A short opening program will be done today followed by demos from coaches and trainers. The demo will help the kids in deciding what sport would fit their interest,” said CCSC’s Gayle Dico.

The venues for the North District include City Central School, Hipodromo Elementary School, Lahug Elementary School, Mabolo Elementary School, Tejero Elementary School, Zapatera Elementary School, Bo. Luz Elementary School and Talamban Elementary School.

Meanwhile, Don Vicente Rama Memorial Elementary School , Pardo Elementary School, Mambaling Elementary School, Labangon Elementary School, Punta Princesa Elementary School, Guadalupe Elementary School, Inayawan Elementary School, San Nicolas Elementary School, Oppra Elementary School, Tisa Elementary School and Cebu City Sports Institute are the chosen venues for the South.
