CEBU, Philippines – Regelito Hortelano prevailed over a field of 33 entries to win the title of the Barangay Lourdes Fiesta Chess Tournament over the weekend at the Bogo Rizal Park in the city of Bogo north of Cebu.

Hortelano, a member of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association finished the 7-round Swiss system competition undefeated, conceding only a draw to come up with 6.5 points.

Bogo's homegrown talent Jasper Doldolea and Michael Tinga of Bantayan Island both ended their campaigns with 5.5 points, but Doldolea got the second place honors by virtue of a superior tie-break output applying the Bucholz system.

For their efforts, Hortelano pocketed P2,000, while Doldolea and Tinga received P1,500 and P1,000, respectively.

The two-day tilt was organized by councilor Kent Faciol and Jesiel Doldolea. The games were supervised by local arbiter Edwin Monsalud. — EBV (FREEMAN)
