Open scrabble tourney at USJ-R Basak on Saturday

CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Jose-Recoletos will hold an open scrabble tournament at 8:30 am this Saturday at the auditorium of USJ-R Basak Campus.

The one-day tilt follows an eight-round, King-of-the-Hill format. The players are given 25 minutes each to finish the game.

Cash prizes will be given away to the top five winners plus a trophy for the champion. The top three placers in the elementary and high school categories will also receive corresponding prizes.

Among the strong contenders to watch out for include the country's No.1 player Teodoro Martus Jr., Independence Day scrabble champ Dart Eslao, UV Challenge titlist Renante de la Cerna, Teresa Barola and Ursi Aparre.

Out to give them a run for their money are a bunch of young but promising word wizards from UV, USJ-R, USC, CIT and USC among other schools.

Organized by the Cebu Scrabble Association, the event is part of the Cebuano players' preparations for the Visayas qualifying of the World Youth Scrabble Championship this August.
