Run for La Salle

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

This is a busy month for running.

This Sunday, I am inviting all enthusiasts and those who are just starting to live the healthy lifestyle to join the Animno La Salle Run, which starts and finishes at the Cebu International Convention Center.

There will be three distances – 12-K, 6-K and 3-K.

The event is part of the nationwide celebration of 100 years of La Salle in the Philippines. The race here is spearheaded by alumni of Andres Soriano Memorial College de la Salle in Toledo City.

Assembly time for the race is set at 4:30 am and the races will start an hour after.

Race director Raffy Uytiepo said that a big delegation coming from Toledo would be joining the race.

Us who trace our roots back to the old Atlas Mining and Development Corporation (ACMDC), which is now known as the Carmen Copper Corporation, look forward to events like these where we get a chance to meet old friends.

I still feel nostalgic each time I visit Toledo City and go to the area where the compound that my family once lived at was located. Nothing is left of the housing compound that was once called ‘The Beach’ but the power plant and the fertilizer factory are still there.

My classmates from La Salle Toledo are planning to have a big group joining the run on Sunday.

ASMS (it used to be Andres Soriano Memorial School) batch ’86 are also the silver jubilarians this year. Some have already arrived from other parts of the world for the celebration that will be held next weekend.

Before the celebration, the class hopes to burn some calories in the Animo La Salle Run.

The second episode of my TV show, Full Point: The Cebu Sports Show is now being aired over Wealth TV channel 28 over SkyCable and Destiny Cable.

The show discusses sports tourism and features the major events held in Lapu-Lapu City, the arnis students that come to Cebu and the Cebufest.

The show airs at 10 a.m., 5 p.m., and 12 midnight every day.

On July 24, the Y101 Armscor Run will be held at the Asiatown IT Park where the start/finish line will be situated.

I learned about this first from Joseph Stevens and got more details from Jack Jakosalem.

The race distances are unique as there are the 1.01-K, 5.01-K, and 10.1-K distances.

I am looking forward to the obstacle course that they set up at the end of the military category.

The obstacle course used to be our favorite dessert after mess when we reported as members of the New Cadet Battalion of the PMA at Camp Aquino in Tarlac back in 1987.

My mistahs in Cebu like Lt. Col. Michael Santos, Cdr. Rolando Punzalan, Jessie Garcia, Butch Ferzo Garcia, Jerry Arrizabal, Remegio Arque, and Vic Sannoy have very fond memories of that obstacle course.

MILESTONES: Happy birthday greetings go to Emil Mercado, Yamie Vestal, Fraces Gatungay, and Doris Fernandez-Alegado, who are turning a year older today.

Advance greetings to those celebrating tomorrow like Gina Virtusio, Shari Rodis-Aquino, and Liza Go-Aguilar.

More power to all of you! – THE FREEMAN
