Juvic

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiones -

I’m still having a hangover from my coverage of the 63rd Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub not because of my alcohol intake, which was almost zero, but because of the week-long activities that had me spending almost the entire day at the golf courses.

The day did not actually end after the stories and the pictures were sent as there was so much buzz in Bacolod City and so many people were there.

One of the people I had the pleasure of having dinner with along with the members of the Alta Vista team was professional golfer Juvic Pagunsan.

Juvic, a native of the town of Murcia, Negros Occidental, where the Bacolod Golf and Country Club is located, joined us at the Korean restaurant for dinner on Wednesday last week.

He just arrived in Bacolod and took time out to join his close friends from Alta Vista especially Wendell Yap, who along with his buddies, often invited the then top amateur golfer Juvic to tournaments in Cebu.

Despite the success that he has achieved in the Asian Tour and in the amateur tournaments in the country and around Asia before turning pro, Juvic has remained the soft-spoken person that he is.

He was driving his new Isuzu D-Max pick-up, which he drove all the way to Negros from Manila when he met the group. He was on his way to play basketball with his buddies in Murcia, which he said is one of the activities that he enjoys outside of golf.

After dinner, Juvic gave me a ride on his new wheels taking me to my hotel.

At 31 years old, there is a bright future ahead for Juvic and I wish him all the best in his pro career.

After a week of golf, there will be more to come as today, we have a meeting of the tournament committee of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club for The View Invitational 2010.

The tournament will be held on May 20 to 23, a week ahead of the schedule that I originally announced several weeks ago.

This is the club’s annual member-guest event.

Tournament chairman and club director Vicente ‘Inting’ Go is reminding all members of the committee to be at the meeting this 9 a.m.

I probably hold the record for being a member of the tournament committee for The View since it was first held in 1999 with Nonoy Tirol as chairman.

The event was named as such because of the wonderful view that Alta Vista, which is carved on the hills of Pardo, offers.

Some people used to laugh at the tournament’s name, which is also referred to as View Tee (sounds like beauty), for sounding too feminine.

The name however stuck and every year we have the event, which is Alta Vista’s signature tournament.

Guests to the club and its members enjoy the view offered by the course to heal the hurt of playing a bad game.

MILESTONES: Belated birthday greetings go to Marco Polo Plaza Hotel’s Belle Lumapas, who turned a year older last Monday along with Marielle Abay-abay-Colina and Aracheli Lipardo-Galan.

The same goes to yesterday’s celebrants – Daisy Bonachita, Dr. Larisa Diaz-Roa, Leric Sotelo and my wife’s niece Julie Reyes Barns.

Today’s greetings go to my good friend Wilson Yu, Charmaine Janis Rodriguez, and to Green Team Cebu’s Eric Du.

More power to all of you!
