UV, UC out of PCCL
CEBU, Philippines - Local top bets representing the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) bowed out from the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) tournament in San Juan, Metro Manila.
Nine-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and runner-up University of Cebu were both eliminated by their Manila rivals from the NCAA and UAAP, respectively and will again go home empty-handed in this annual gathering of top collegiate teams in the country.
The Lancers lost to Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) 76-73 while the Webmasters received a more severe beating from UAAP runner-up the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors 88-106.
Another CESAFI bet – the University of San Carlos - will try its luck tomorrow against reigning NCAA champion San Sebastian College (SSC) Stags in Ormoc City.
Unless the Warriors could pull an upset over SSC, all CESAFI teams will have to look forward to next year’s tournament.
Local schools have yet to narrow the gap, when it comes to basketball skills between them and their rivals especially those from Manila schools. During the games, these schools showed they could defend big guys like UV’s 6’11” Greg Slaughter and UC’s 6’9” June Mar Fajardo. (FREEMAN NEWS)
