Freeman Cebu Sports

One for the Manny

SPORTS EYE - Raffy T. Uytiepo -

I took the last flight out of Manila last Saturday to be at the Marco Polo Plaza on Sunday morning. Despite the persuasions of my cousins to watch the Pacman – Hatton bout in a Makati hotel, I opted to catch the flight. Well, you see, it’s some sort of tradition to watch Manny Pacquiao at the Marco Polo Plaza. Besides, I promised events coordinator Carlo Borromeo, communications manager Aileen Quijano, PR. officer Anabelle Lumapas, F&B manager Albert Banaag and Cely Osumo, that I will watch Manny at the Plaza. I came early, so Carlo and I could discuss some sporting events for the hotel. I again reiterated my plan to hold the first-ever Marco Polo Tower Run before the year ends. The run is patterned from step-up-runs in Malaysia, where runners cover 2,000 steps of the Petronas Tower while in New York, the event is held at the Empire State Building (1,560 steps). In the proposed tower run, runners will start at USP then climb the hill going to Marco Polo, then cover the 420 steps leading to the finish line at the penthouse. My “kababayan” Engr. Toto Chavez, the technical service manager, is quite excited and promised to assist me. Now back to Manny, I never had doubts on his winning over Ricky Hatton but I didn’t expect he would make short work of the Briton. Albert Banaag even joked. “Hindi nabenta ang beer ko”. A friend at Robinsons Place challenged me to a bet (Hatton siya) but I declined. When he asked why, I said “nalooy ko nimo”. Had I accepted his bet, he would have probably lost his pants. To Manny it’s nice knowing a champion like you so it’s one more for the Manny, May the weather permits!

Legends Of Rock And Roll

While Carlo is interested in the Tower Run, he wants a musical happening in the Plaza, considering Carlos’ love for music. I heard Carlo plays the guitar like Jimi Hendrix. Well, I told Carlo I could invite my group to perform in a show that we will call “Legends of Rock and Roll”. I intend to gather members of our group, Cebu Association of Singers Inc. (CASI) headed by former Tawag ng Tanghalan champion Novo Bono. We intend to field impersonators of Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Bob Marley, Tina Turner, with yours truly as Elvis Presley. Our group is composed of Cebu’s legendary singers, Dante Luzon, Girlie Lapinid, Mon Villanueva (The Rainmakers), Gil Maningo, Vic Eco, Aida Pallar, Budoy Aime Filomeno and Elvis Pino, just to mention a few. Carlo intends to hold the show either June or July.
