Lancers reign in CESAFI hoop

The University of the Visayas Green Lancers celebrated another double victory at home after they successfully defended their juniors and seniors titles in the basketball event of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) the other night.
The seniors were simply amazing in the court as they tore into pieces the University of Cebu Webmasters, 76-55, while the juniors team literally passed by the proverbial eye of the needle before dispatching off the pesky Cebu Institute of Technology Wildkittens, 67-66 in overtime.
In the distaff side, the UC Lady Webmasters also defended their women's title by beating the University of San Carlos Lady Warriors in a knockout match, 68-63.
It was a record of sort for the Lancers as they won their fifth consecutive CESAFI crown when they allowed the Webmasters only two points in the entire third period on a basket by Miguelito Ducay in the 5:11 mark. From a close 42-41 halftime lead in favor of UV, the game quickly turned into the Lancers' way as they mounted more defensive hustle outscoring the Webmasters, 21-2, enroute to taking a 20-point lead, 63-43 at the end of the third period.
Not taking any chances, the Lancers finished off with a 23-12 scoring run in the fourth and final period that made the championship game a one-sided affair.
"Our defense did a heavy damage to them. We did not allow them to score easily," said Lancers coach Elmer "Boy" Cabahug, who also said that it was part of their preparation to limit their opponents below 70 points.
The Lancers never lost a championship game since CESAFI started in 2001. They first defeated CIT and then USJR for three straight years.
Jaysar Esperat responded well for the Lancers, leading the offense with 23 points as the 2004 three-point king had an almost flawless field shooting. The floor leadership of Mark Ababon was a plus factor, a reason he was named MVP.
Ababon beat teammates and last year's MVP Jayford Rodriguez and Mepaña in n the race as well as the two other members in the Mythical Five including UC's Ducay and Elvis Labares of USP.
Ducay, who is playing for his last CESAFI year, led the Webmasters with 15 points while Orville Saludsod had 10 points.
In the secondary championship, the Baby Lancers rallied from 11-points down, 38-49, late in the third period to force an overtime before pulling rugs from under.
Phil Mercader, who was chosen the high school MVP, forced an overtime by a splitting his charities, 55-all, with only 1.2 seconds left in regulation.
In the extra time, the Baby Lancers went on to control the game. They had a 67-64 lead in the final 15 seconds in overtime also on Cabahug's basket until CIT's Rex Ybañez made it 66-67 down to 10 seconds.
The fouling out of CIT's key Manny Diaz, Kenneth Cañete and Karen Rick dela Cerna further improved UV's chances of winning.
Mercader led the Baby Lancers with 15 points, John Cell Cañada had 12 points and another 10 points each from Rookie of the Year Lucky Pitogo and Quinton Bryan Heruela.
It was the Baby Lancers' fourth CESAFI title and their third straight from 2003. They won the first CESAFI title in 2001 while the USJ-R Baby Jaguars won the title in 2002.
Del Mar, the smallest in the CIT roster, led the Wildkittens with 17 points while Diaz finished with 16 points.
In the women's finals, Annabel Nieves topscored for the Lady Webmasters with 23 points while Carol Guay, who was named the MVP, finished with 15 points.
As expected, it was Jessamine delos Reyes, who led the Lady Warriors with 22 points.
