Pampanga gov launches book on political reform

-

“Luid Ka!” (Hail to you!), a book on the political reform “miracle” in Pampanga was launched yesterday in the University of the Philippines in the Visayas Cebu College with the attendance of Pampanga Governor Eddie Panlilio.

The book covers the triumph of Kapampangans over their struggle for good governance in Pampanga and tells about the experience of Panlilio’s campaign team and how they were able to win the battle against big politicians and install Panlilio, who used to be a priest, in the gubernatorial seat.

“‘Luid ka!’ will be used to advance good governance and responsible citizenship to create another pocket of hope towards genuine reforms in our society. Pampanga’s People Power experience is one among many movements in our country that can inspire others to unite, stand up and make a difference in our common struggle to rid our country of the evils of patronage and traditional politics,” said writer, researcher and member of the book team Nina Tomen.

The highlight of the event was a forum featuring resource persons from Pampanga and Cebu exchanging of stories and reflections on the struggle for genuine social and political reforms in the country.

In his speech, Panlilio said the greatest challenge of the country is the challenge of bringing back hope in the hearts of the people that Philippines can still have a good and just government.

“We have to regain the trust of the people.  And Pampanga cannot do it alone.  With everybody and with the grace of God, the Philippines can still transform into a better country,” Panlilio said.

Fr. Carmelo Diola of the Dilaab Foundation addressed the missing link in social transformation.  He said what the Filipinos need is a faith —impelled solidarity which is the determination inspired by God to commit oneself to the common good.

“If we pray, if we realize that the first advocate is the Holy Spirit, if we integrate our acts together and when we bring Jesus on board, we will reach our destination bound to a better Philippines faster,” Diola said.  — Jessica Ann Pareja, UP intern/BRP
