Kristin De Dios - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Lapu-Lapu City Government has assured full support and coordination with national agencies following the death of an Oponganon in a missile attack in Haifa, Israel, as local officials move to assist the grieving family.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan expressed deep sorrow over the death of Lucille-Jean Gershovich, who was among those killed in a missile strike on April 5 amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

“Dako kaayo ang akong kasubo sa pagkadungog sa makaguol nga balita mahitungod sa kamatayon sa atong isig ka-Oponganon nga Pinay,” the mayor said, extending her condolences to the victim’s family.

The city government, she said, is ready to extend assistance and coordinate with concerned agencies to ensure that the family receives the necessary support.

Chan also called on the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to immediately assist the bereaved family, particularly in facilitating all necessary processes, including the possible repatriation of the victim’s remains and access to financial and logistical aid from the national government.

“Ang kagamhanan sa Lapu-Lapu City andam usab nga motabang ug makig-coordinate sa tanang hingtungdang ahensya aron masiguro nga dili pasagdan ang pamilya sa biktima ug mahatagan sila sa hustong suporta niining panahon sa pagbangotan,” she added.

Based on information gathered from the family, Gershovich had lived in Lapu-Lapu City for over 16 years and previously worked at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

The city added that she later met her Israeli husband, whom she married in 2024, and migrated to Israel just six months ago through a spousal visa.

The family is now appealing for the immediate processing of the repatriation of her remains so that she can be brought home and given a proper burial.

Mayor King-Chan also offered prayers for the safety of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in conflict-affected areas, urging continued vigilance amid escalating tensions abroad. (CEBU NEWS)
