CEBU, Philippines — After his declaration of “independence” over the weekend which political pundits viewed as a loyalty check, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has reiterated his call for all city officials, regardless of political affiliations, to rally behind him in serving the people and not their political party.

Rama, who has been very passionate about attending flag ceremonies, has been calling on the members of the City Council to join him every Monday after noticing that only one or two councilors join him regularly.

“Flag ceremony for me is a sacred ceremony,” said Rama, who was already joined by Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia and Councilors Donaldo Hontiveros, Francis Esparis, Rey Gealon, Gerry Guardo, and Jun Alcover, yesterday.

The said officials showed solidarity with Rama in celebration of the 125th National Flag Day at the City Hall grounds.

Last Friday, Rama announced during the flag retreat ceremony that he will now be an “independent” mayor with his allegiance only to the people and not to his political party.

City Administrator Collin Rosell explained what the mayor meant by his declaration of “independence.”

“A pro-people proclamation…Call upon the people…Government authority emanates from the people…Loyalty to the party ends where the interest of the people begins…The recent public pronouncement of independence of Mayor Mike Rama is practically a strong call and reminder upon the people to own, claim, love, and support their government and its duly elected representatives or leader,” Rosell said.

According to Rosell, the mayor is looking for inclusivity and people-centered governance. This means that all community leaders, regardless of political color, are welcome to join.

Rama also said that those who are willing to help him achieve his administration’s vision of a Singapore-like Cebu City are always welcome to join him.

“Ayaw ninyo’g kalimti ang mga baga kaayo nga mga kabus,” Rama said.

After yesterday’s flag ceremony, Rama reiterated his call for solidarity to all elected officials present.

“Kamong mga elected (officials)...apil mo diri kung makig kuyog mo nga ang gahom naa sa katawhan...kun ang katawhan maoy gahom,” Rama said. — (FREEMAN)
