CCTO starts enforcing speed limits

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) finally got the needed speed guns to effectively implement City Ordinance 2616, which sets vehicle speed limits on the city’s thoroughfares.
CCTO deputy chief for operations Paul Gotiong said they have already started training traffic personnel on how to use the equipment. Gotiong said they intend to pilot test the speed guns at the South Road Properties, North Reclamation Area, and at the Transcentral Highway where accidents due to over speeding are usually reported.
"Right now, we are still orienting our personnel to use it to ensure the smooth process in the implementing," Gotiong said.
CCTO has warned motorists to always observe the maximum speed limit and other road signs.
Under the city ordinance on speed limit, a first time offender will be fined P2,000 and four hours seminar. Second offense carries a penalty of P2,500 fine, four hours seminar, and three hours community service. Third time offender will be fined P3,000 plus impounding of vehicle.
For cars and motorcycles, the speed limit is 80 kph on national primary roads, 70 kph on national secondary roads, 60 kph on national tertiary roads, 40kph on provincial roads and 20 kph on barangay roads and crowded streets.
Buses, trucks and large vehicles shall maintain a speed of 50 kph on open roads, 30 kph on through streets and 20 kph on crowded streets. — Sanden J. Anadia, FPL (FREEMAN)
