Public warned: Be careful with your online accounts

CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu City Councilor David Tumulak has cautioned the public to be careful in using their online accounts.

Tumulak said that since last month, his office has received several complaints on online identity theft and extortion.

“Ang akong na-receive diri mga eight cases na. Atong gi-endorse ngadto sa cybercrime kalabot ining identity theft, which is gamiton nila ang mga social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter nga dunay mga fake accounts gamit ang mga profile picture, name sa tawo, kopyahon ang inyohang mga photo albums sa inyohang mga Facebook, and then mangayo ni sila’g mga kwarta sa inyong mga kaparentihan. Maayo kani sila maniid,” said Tumulak.

Tumulak said because of fear, these Facebook owners asked his office for help and they eventually endorsed it to the anti-cybercrime unit.

“Sad to note, nga ang cybercrime maglisod sila sa pagsulbad gumikan kay kaning mga fake accounts, on and off. Ang ato lang makuha ang ilaha lang IP address, so they can use anywhere gamit ang lain-lain nga IP address,” he said.

The councilor said they also tapped private technical experts to catch the individuals behind the fake accounts.

Tumulak reminded the public not to divulge all their personal information online, especially pictures of family members as well as pictures inside and outside their residence, to avoid being victimized by these online hackers.

“Ato man sad ni natong gisumbong sa Facebook. Naay uban nga gipang-block na, pero maro kaayo sa tanan kay maglisod og block sad ang Facebook kay mawa man. Mura man sya’g ghost, in and out man siya,” said Tumulak.

He said these hackers also know the time when a person usually opens his or her Facebook.

During this time, they would also penetrate to sense messages which could be used to scare or intimidate the original Facebook owners.
