3 Malasakit Centers open in Visayas

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Three new Malasakit Centers have been established in the Visayas, according to the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas (OPAV).

The centers are situated at Siquijor Provincial Hospital, Eastern Samar Provincial Hospital in Borongan City, and Ormoc District Hospital.

The center, an initiative of both Duterte and Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, is a one-stop shop program wherein the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Philippine Health Insurance Corp., Department of Health and other government office are housed in one location to ease the process for patients in need of medical and financial assistance.

At present, the country has 37 Malasakti Centers, including the three.

The center in Siquijor, which became operational on July 4, was unveiled by Go and OPAV Chief Michael Lloyd Dino.

They also turned over P5 million check to the provincial hospital.

The amount serves as a Malasakit Fund, which indigent patients may be availed of.

The Siquijor Malasakit Center is the 11th center in the Visayas.

On July 5, the Malasakit Centers in the cities of Ormoc and Borongan were also opened to the public.

Go and Dino also graced the centers’ opening and handed over P5 million check to each hospital.

The centers in Borongan and Ormoc City are the 36th and 37th, respectively, in the Philippines.

The Malasakit Center was piloted at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City in February 2018.

Every Malasakit Center receives a monthly funding from the Office of the President, coined as the Malasakit Fund.
