Outstanding traffic aides to get award

Odessa O. Leyson - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) will recognize at least 10 outstanding traffic enforcers in the city.

The Rotary Club of Cebu Port Centre introduced the idea of giving honor and award to traffic aides for their performance in implementing traffic rules and manning the traffic flow.

“These men and women in the traffic enforcement field deserve to be given recognition and honor not just in monetary means but more on appreciation and commendations on what they have contributed for the road safety of the Cebuanos,” portion of CCTO’s press release reads.

The search for outstanding enforcers started in 2016 when CCTO realized the importance of giving acknowledgement to them.

“There are people who have seen their sacrifices and their worthy deeds such that they are worthy to be emulated by the general public,” it added.

CCTO, along with rotary club, had set criteria in choosing the 10 outstanding traffic aides.

These are attendance, quality of apprehensions, number of complaints related to work, relationship between fellow enforcers, and relationship with clients.

Attendance refers to the punctuality of the worker and absences incurred should be in compliance with the Civil Service Commission (CSC) rules and regulations.

The number of quality of apprehensions means how the enforcers implement traffic rules in their respective area of responsibility while the number of complaints related to work refers to less complaints being raised against the enforcer and its good relationship with co-workers.

Further, relationship with client refers to the attitude of giving respect and courtesy to the public while performing his duty.

CCTO operations chief Francisco Ouano said his office and the Rotary Club of Cebu Port Centre will choose who are these qualified traffic enforcers.

Record shows that there are almost 400 traffic aides in the City of Cebu.

Those 10 outstanding workers will receive monetary award amounting to P10, 000 each and will receive an increase of the insurance coverage.

“Naa sila’y P10, 000 cash and insurance mas higher kaysa regular nga insurance nga ihatag. Naa na sila’y rate pila ang i-increase (insurance),” Ouano said.

The awarding ceremony is projected to happen on January next year after the Sinulog festival celebration.

“Grabe ang ilahang pagserbisyo, uwan, init, abog. Naa sila kanunay sa dalan. At least pamaagi ani, ma-encourage ang traffic enforcers to perform their duty well kay naa’y somebody who recognizes their efforts,” Ouano said.

Councilor David Tumulak, chairman of the City Council committee on public order and safety, said it is important to give recognition to hardworking enforcers to pay off their exemplary performance.

He said the job of traffic enforcers is not easy for they are managing the traffic which is among the top concern of the public.

Aside from addressing the traffic problem, he said they are going to deal with the drivers and commuters every day.

“Sila ang pinaka-bullied gyud, siyagitan pani sila. Uy, nag unsa man ka dinha, wala man nimo atimana ang naa sa imoha likod. So luoy kaayo sila,” Tumulak said.

Tumulak has personal observation how the public treated the enforcers due to his experiences in manning the traffic along Natalio Bacalso Avenue. (FREEMAN)
