Two drug suspects killed in encounter

CEBU, Philippines - Two suspected drug personalities were killed in separate police operations in Cebu City and Mandaue City yesterday.

The fatalities were identified as Ed Borces, 51, one of the most wanted persons in Barangay Talamban, Cebu City, and Amelito Mahinay, 40, a known drug personality in Mandaue City.

Borces was killed during an alleged shootout with the members of the Talamban Police Station yesterday morning in Purok 3, Barangay San Jose, Cebu City.

Senior Inspector Percival Miasco, Talamban Police Station chief, said Borces was subject of a buy-bust operation when he allegedly engaged the police in a shootout.

Miasco said Borces fired at the police operatives after the undercover policeman blew his cover. The police operatives were forced to return fire, killing the suspect.

Miasco said they have asked Borces earlier during the Oplan Tokhang operations to stop his illegal activities.

“Sige’g tokhang di man gyud mo-surrender niresulta,” Miasco said.

The suspect’s daughter, Jade, admitted her father was engaged in the illegal drug activities.

“Mao may ingon nila pero dili ni siya ingon nga dako kaayo ginagmay ra,” Jade told reporters.

The police recovered at least P30,000 worth of shabu and a caliber .38 revolver from the suspect’s possession.

Mahinay, on the other hand, was killed yesterday in Sitio Toril, Barangay Tingub, Mandaue City. He was in the watchlist of Casuntingan Police Station as one of the drug personalities operating in their area.

Senior Inspector Janelito Marquez, deputy city intelligence officer of the Mandaue City Police Office, said the police were responding an armed person alarm when they chanced upon Mahinay.  (FREEMAN)
