Mylen P. Manto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - San Fernando, Cebu police are looking at "grudge" as possible motive in the shooting of the older brother of town mayor Antonio "Abe" Canoy at around 4:15 p.m. last Saturday.

Rey Llanto Canoy, 74, a resident of Barangay North Poblacion and a private secretary of Mayor Canoy, was shot twice while he was at the cockpit in Barangay Ilaya, San Fernando town.

The suspects were identified as spouses Peter and Marilou Baranguian, residents of Barangay Panadtaran, San Fernando.

Rey was attending the annual fiesta of the said barangay when shot in the back and in the eye. He is currently confined in a private hospital in Cebu City.

"Gikuha iyang right eye kay naigo man human ang bala nitapsing sa iyang ulo ngadto sa kilid sa iyang mata," he said.

He added the couple was allegedly tipsy during the incident.

Gadingan said Rey did not notice Malou was the one who shot Rey, who had a gun in his sling back but was not able to pull it out and fire back. After Rey was hit, the couple allegedly took his bag containing P65,000 and a .45 cal. pistol.

Gadingan said that based on the statements of those who witnessed the incident, the couple were both armed.

He said the couple had no records that they were involved in illegal business.

Gadingan believed that the couple likely attacked Rey because they were under the influence of liquor at that time, otherwise they would not have done it.

He said that though the suspects and Rey supported different parties in the May 9 elections, they had discount politics as motive for the attack.

Complaints of frustrated murder and robbery will be filed against the couple. (FREEMAN)
