CEBU, Philippines - Organizers are encouraging the youth, among other sectors of the society, to participate in the 10th Gabii sa Kabilin (Night of Heritage) on May 27 as a way of better appreciating Cebu's rich culture and heritage.

Gabii sa Kabilin, an annual event organized by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., takes participants to a heritage tour in Metro Cebu's famous heritage and cultural landmarks.

This year, the trail will have 41 stops, including museums, hotels, schools and other public sites.  Tickets cost P150 each.

According to organizers, guests will get to see exhibits, join scavenger hunt, listen to storytelling of myths and legends, create an original pineapple monoprint, learn to play the ukulele, make and taste "linusak" or pounded banana with sugar and grated coconut, among others. There will also be activities for children in the select participating museums.

Dr. Madrileña de la Cerna, a historian, encouraged teachers and students to visit museums to know more about Cebu's history.

"Daghan nang mga kabatan-onan nga wala nakahibaw kung unsa'y history sa ilang lungsod or sa ilang birthplace," she said.

The theme this year is "Forging Peoples" as organizers want participants to see how the mixture of different influences helped shape Cebu's modern society.

"Ang mga tawo karon molangyaw na man gyud. Sa kani nga paagi (Gabii sa Kabilin), matagaan nato sila og roots kay bisa'g asa na sila, bisa'g unsa pa na ka high-tech, naa pa gihapo'y mabalikan," Madrileña said. — (FREEMAN)
