CSCR tunnel off limits to 6-wheeled vehicles

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Transportation Office has barred six-wheeled vehicles and above from entering the Cebu South Coastal Road tunnel because of the ongoing road concreting project that is expected to last for two months.

CCTO operations head Jonathan Tumulak said the road concreting works of the Department of Public Works and Highways started at the entry points of the tunnel.

At least six CCTO personnel are deployed in the area for 24 hours, in three shifts, to direct the traffic in the area and ensure that congestion is addressed immediately.

Portions of the roads leading to the CSCR tunnel in the city have also been closed to pave way for the concreting project.

“Sa akong level, akong gihunahuna ang pag-control sa traffic para maka-prevent og accidents in the area,” Tumulak said.

He said the road works started in the first week of February and is targeted to finish by two months.

“As of now, manageable ra ang traffic sa tunnel as long as walay disgrasya near sa area,” he said.

The road project was stopped by Mayor Michael Rama last year but was recently given clearance to proceed.

Rama said he has given orders to the DPWH contractor to ensure that the project is completed before the opening of the classes in June.

“We already had an agreement. Kita man ko nga it (traffic) is still moving. That is what I have been telling them. Do not prejudice and then make it faster. I do not want nga it will end up and that will have to be finished when classes will start,” Rama said.

DPWH-7 has awarded the P16 million concreting project to Virlo Construction last year. —(FREEMAN)
