Grace Melanie L. Lacamiento - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – The National Bureau of Investigation-7 arrested an alleged illegal recruiter in uptown Cebu City Monday afternoon.

The operation led to the arrest of suspect Bebie Jean Deniega, 35, a native of Dumanjug town, who allegedly offers jobs in Japan to interested applicants in exchange for payment.

In an interview with dyHP, NBI-7 special investigator and team leader Larry Dominguez said the operation stemmed from the complaints of at least 19 victims.

The suspect is reportedly married to a Japanese national and is currently staying in Cebu City.

One of the complainants, Edwin Vino, 40, alleged that Deniega recruited him to work in Japan as a factory worker.

He revealed over the radio station that he gave P35,000 to Deniega who allegedly promised them that they, especially men, would be prioritized for the position if they would pay in full.

Vino said Deniega does not have any office address and had told them that she was directly communicating with the employer in Japan.

He said they would meet in malls where the transaction and submission of documents take place.

Another complainant, a female who requested not to be named, also disclosed that the suspect allegedly guaranteed her of a housekeeping job and another job at a factory in Japan.

She said she had already paid P25,000 to Deniega on April 27 this year but there had been no developments on her supposed job application.

The NBI-7 urged other complainants to surface and report to their office if they were also victimized by Deniega.

The suspect is currently detained and will be facing charges before the Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor. —/NSA (FREEMAN)
