Local LP members optimistic Roxas’ ratings will improve

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Leaders of the Liberal Party in the sixth district of Cebu expressed confidence that Interior Secretary Mar Roxas will improve his survey rating in the presidential race in the next few days.

The Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on the other hand, hopes the LP leadership will continue since they have seen a big improvement in their city.

Representative Gabriel Luis Quisumbing and Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes both believe in the qualification of Roxas.

“Para nako, 2016 is an excellent opportunity for us to look beyond popularity. It’s time for us to look at platform, it’s time for us to look vision, it’s time for us to look at capability,” said Quisumbing, the district chairman of LP.

He said these should be the primary traits in choosing leaders rather than going for who is the most popular.

“If we talk about capability, qualifications, looking at entire field without judging anything else, without judging popularity, kung tan-awon lang ang presidentiables karon, can you see that there’s anybody more qualified than Mar?” said Quisumbing.

Cortes, the city chairman of LP, also said other candidates than Roxas might be popular but the problem is how to convert the popularity into votes.

“I’m sure nga finally, gituboy na gyud sa presidente si Secretary Mar Roxas, from here on nga mosaka na ni hinay-hinay ang iya’ng ratings,” Cortes said.

Cortes also believes Roxas is the one who can continue the programs of President Benigno Aquino III, particularly his push to fight corruption in the government.

“We cannot solve our problems overnight. It has to be a long range planning. At least nasugdan, it’s a tough decision but iya na gibuhat kay nakita nga husto. I’m confident Secretary Mar mosaka ang rating,” Cortes added.

MCCI president Donato Busa said he believes LP as a party has given the best in terms of managing resources.

“We are happy because the LP leadership hangtud diri sa Mandaue lig-on gyud kaayo ta. We are very happy nga maayo unta ang LP as a whole mao gihapon ang magdumala,” Busa said.

Cortes, who can no longer seek for reelection, is reportedly eyeing the House of Representatives while Quisumbing, who still has another term, will run for mayor in 2016.

Although he has not categorically confirmed on what position they will be running for, Cortes hinted that they already have the group.

These include former vice mayor Carlo Pontico Fortuna, who will reportedly be the runningmate of Quisumbing, while Vice Mayor Glenn Bercede will reportedly run for a seat in the Provincial Board.

“We will do everything nga ang good governance nga nasugdan magpadayun. Kada usa namo is willing to sacrifice kung unsa ang makaayo sa dakbayan,” Cortes added. — (FREEMAN)
