Man caught for snatching cellphone

CEBU, Philippines - A man was arrested while his companion escaped after they reportedly snatched a phone of a woman who was heading home after attending the Walk with Jesus procession yesterday morning in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City. 

The suspect was identified as Ronaldo Purisima, 26, a native of San Carlos, Negros Oriental. The one who eluded arrest was identified as Ronald del Rosario of Lutopan, Toledo City.

Investigation and Detective Management Branch chief Aileen Recla said they were not able to get the victim’s name as she was on a hurry and she also did not prefer to file a case against the suspects. 

The victim was onboard a passenger utility jeepney bound for Barangay Talamban when upon reaching Barangay Banilad, the robbers, who were riding a blue motorcycle, stopped near the front seat of the jeepney where the victim was sitting.

The two then reportedly stole the iPhone of the victim. 

Elements of the IDMB who happened to pass by the area while conducting foot patrol were able to arrest Purisima. 

The policemen also chased del Rosario, who immediately escaped by jumping off a river near the area. 

Recla said that based on Purisima’s allegation, del Rosario has been involved in burglary and snatching incidents. Purisima also claimed that it was his first time to accompany del Rosario.

Recla said that del Rosario has been reported to be on the list of wanted persons in Toledo City. The IDMB chief said they will coordinate with Toledo City Police Station regarding the report.

Recovered from the suspects were a cal. 38 revolver, the blue motorcycle which Purisima claimed was stolen in Tabunok, Talisay City, empty wallets and bank cards believed to be owned by their previous victims in Barangay Mabolo. 

Purisima, who is currently detained at the Cebu City Police Office, called on del Rosario to surrender to the authorities. (FREEMAN)
