CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama assured that the city’s share of the income in the operation of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation was not depleted Rama made the assurance following a statement from Councilor Mary Ann delos Santos that the fund is being abused.

Councilor Ritchie Osmeña proposed on Wednesday to charge P3,491,900 against the PAGCOR funds.

The amount will be used to defray the expenses of the city delegation to the 2014 Philippine National Games to be held in Metro Manila on May 16 to 25.

Osmeña explained that the City Sports Commission did not have a budget for it.

Councilor Margarita Osmeña, who chairs the committee on budget and finance, said there is P47-million worth of expenses that is being obligated against PAGCOR funds.

Delos Santos observed that there is “seems to be abused” in the use of the funds and noted that she has not benefited from it since she assumed office in July.

“I think it’s high time to be very circumspect on all accounts to be charged, especially related to sports commission,” said delos Santos.

Rama said that the fund was spent to programs intended for it.

“Kinsa ma’y gagamit ana for personal, wa man kaha? Basta way personal naggamit, they need not worry because I was just checking with my city treasurer, especially if mahuman na ni’ng (deal with) Filinvest, we will have two point one (2.1) billion money. Right now, we have almost one point six (1.6) billion, according to my city treasurer,” said Rama.

City treasurer Diwa Cuevas validated Rama’s claim.

“Dili tinuod na depleted. Naa ma’y daghang kwarta ang PAGCOR,” she said.

PAGCOR remits P3 million monthly share to the city government from its income in casino operations.

The PAGCOR funds are used for sports and cultural activities, poverty alleviation programs, peace and order programs, and purchase of vehicles, among others. (FREEMAN)
