Woman killed in fire

Ria Mae Y. Booc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A 42-year-old woman died after she was trapped inside their house during a fire in Barangay Sabang, Danao City Wednesday night.

The body of Anecita Qui, a polio victim, was found charred in her wheelchair inside their house an hour later after the fire.

SFO2 Leopoldo Pesguera, fire investigator, said Deokleceno Qui, brother of the victim, was in the neighborhood when the fire started around 8 pm.

Fire investigators, however, have yet to determine the cause of fire.

“Wala pa mi info kung unsa gyud ang sinugdanan sa kayo possible sa kwarto o sa kusina di pa mi katumbok gyud,” Pesguera said.

The bungalow-type of house, which was made from light materials, was easily destroyed by the fire.

Pesguera said that Deokleceno and their neighbors noticed the fire but it was too late to rescue Anecita, who could not walk due to her condition.

The fire was controlled within three minutes before it was eventually put out, leaving an estimated damage of P70,000.

Meanwhile, six houses were totally burned in Barangay Dakit, Barili early morning yesterday.

SPO3 Elmer Opsima, desk officer, said the fire started at the house owned by a certain Maria Minda Baguio.

Opsima said that residents were alarmed when thick smoke was coming out from the roof of Baguio’s house.

Other houses destroyed by the fire were those of Angeles Baranggan, Rowena Roda, Grace Elmilla, Edwin Elestrio and Sergio Perpetua.

Fire fighters from Sibonga and Barili responded to put out the fire, which was raised to second alarm.

Arson investigators, however, are investigating the cause of fire that left an estimated P250,000 worth of damage. (FREEMAN)
