Japan strengthens Phl ties

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The Japanese government continues to support the Philippines, especially in Mindanao, with the Japan-Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstuction and Development (J-BIRD).

Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Toshinao Urabe, in his lecture-forum, yesterday stated that they have built 42 schools and 199 classrooms, ten training centers, five water stations and one health center.

Aside from these, the Japanese government has likewise provided 4,500 food aid, one micro-credit project, agricultural machinery, warehouses, solar dryers, irrigation canal as well as the Central Mindanao Road Project.

Meanwhile, Japan and the Philippines will continue to find a peaceful solution over disputed islands as claimed by China.

“Japan and Philippines will abide the law under UNCLOS. We will continue to find a peaceful solution,” said Urabe during the “Role of Japan in Promoting Peace in the Asi-Pacific Region” lecture-forum yesterday at the University of San Carlos-Talamban Campus.

China also claimed the Spratly group of islands, which the Philippines also claimed.

Urabe said that China can only claim historical right but is short in legal basis. — (FREEMAN)
