Call center promises to pay workers

CEBU, Philippines - Terminated workers of Direct Access Corporation, a call center company that closed last week, are now seeing hope after the management promised to pay its outstanding payables to them.

Dennis Derige, spokesperson of Partido ng Manggagawa-Cebu who is assisting the workers, said that the management represented by its president, Ronald del Rosario, promised during the negotiation yesterday that the company shall be given one month to pay the workers.

“This is a positive development although the workers wanted that they will be paid in the next few days kay gutom na gyud sila. Daghan na sad og naningil nila like boarding house rental, among others,” Derige said.

The company has a total payables of P9.2 million to its 668 terminated workers representing unpaid salaries, allowances, among others. He added that workers are willing to receive any amount in a staggered basis.

Derige said that during the negotiation, workers’ representatives were told that there is a possibility that the company will re-open and that they will be hired again.

As the negotiation continued, the workers together with PM held a protest rally in front of the company premises at the Asiatown I.T. Park.- (FREEMAN)
