Jonas inaugurates Tabok road project

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue city Mayor Jonas Cortes inaugurated yesterday the P6.5-million Tabok  Road widening project in barangay Tabok, Mandaue city .

The project, which is the first four-lane barangay road in the city, commences from the corner of North road, which is 123 meters long, 18 meters wide, and 12 inches thick.

The project was awarded to PLD Construction during the previous administration and was not immediately implemented due to problems concerning road right of way.

Engr. Peter Dy of PLD construction said the project was started in January this year after the city administration’s office successfully negotiated with the owners of affected properties.

During a short program held yesterday, Mayor Cortes said the widening of the Tabok road is considered a landmark project of the city and of the barangay which will definitely spur economic growth not only in the barangay but also in the city.

The mayor also announced that if re-elected he will continue the project up to the Pagsabungan bridge.

This can be implemented by phases which if completed would cost the city some P100 million including the road right of way acquisition, said Engr. Sanchez, adding the funding could be sourced from the national government.

Barangay Tabok is home to some 25 companies which are mostly in manufacturing including Pacific Traders, a furniture company, and URC, makers of Chippy, among others.

Just when the project was completed, three companies applied for barangay permits for the construction of their buildings.

Tabok Barangay Captain Dario Tariman said these companies which include two warehouse companies and a manufacturing firm are already in the construction period.

He said that another benefit that would come from the road opening is the easing up of traffic at the corner during peak hours.

Barangay captains of neighboring urban barangays also attended the opening ceremony. Also in attendance were barangay residents including members of Palmas Verdes Homeowners Association, Inc. who issued a manifesto signed by some 100 members supporting the re-election bid of the mayor.
