Carmen to award 10 outstanding bizmen

-

CEBU, Philippines – Aside from the State of the Municipality Address to be delivered by Mayor Sonia Pua on June 16, for the 158th founding anniversary of the municipality of Carmen, 10 businessmen who displayed exemplary performances and achievements will be awarded.

Pua said that there is a great need to “acknowledge those who contributed in the development of the town in terms of commerce/trade and industry.”

Also, Pua mentioned of Ernesto Lariosa, former official of the National Food Authority-7, being commissioned by the University of San Carlos-Cebuano Studies Center to provide them data on the town’s founding celebration. This is part of the program of the provincial government to publish a book that compiles the history of towns in the Province of Cebu.

She said that based on Lariosa's research, they learned that Carmen separated from the parish of Catmon on June 16, 1851 which was about the time Spanish officials converted Carmen into a municipality. A respected resident of Carmen named Facundo Buot was appointed as the first gobernadorcillo at the time of the Spanish Regime.

“Kinahanglan nga lingi-on gyod nato ang atong kaagi aron maayo atong basihanan sa paglambo,” Pua said.

Programs for the founding anniversary will include a tree planting activity, a photo exhibit, a basketball tournament, a boxing match, a poster making contest, bangga sa balak and tigi sa harana, as well as cultural performances and film screening. – Jose P. Sollano/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
