Boy, 10, drowns in floodwaters

A 10-year-old boy drowned in sitio Lakdon, barangay Cambuhawi, Toledo City, yesterday afternoon after he was swept away by a flashflood.

PO3 Celso Diaz of the Toledo City police station identified the victim as Alexis Santos Bago.

Diaz said Bago was with taking a bath in the river behind the barangay’s cockpit with four other friends when heavy downpour started around 3 p.m.

The other four boys were already at the riverbanks when the water started rising and the current got stronger.  “Samtang naligo sa sapa, mikalit og dako ang tubig.  Kining usa ang gidimalas kay naanod,” Diaz told radio dyLA.

Bago’s body was found by residents of the area in a culvert some 200 meters away from the place where he and his friends were swimming after a search and rescue operation.

Diaz said they brought Bago to the district hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. — Fred P. Languido/BRP
