Frat chapter president killed in Lapu-Lapu

- Ryan P. Borinaga -
The chapter president of a fraternity in Cordova town was shot to death in sitio Carahay, barangay Gun-ob, Lapu-Lapu City Saturday night while drinking with two members of the same fraternity.

The death of William Anlocotan, 19, a resident of Cogon, Cordova came two days before the celebration of the 32nd founding anniversary of Alpha Kappa Rho today. A grand motorcade is expected to pass by universities and colleges in Cebu City this morning.

Anlocotan was visiting Lester Ouano and Ariel Undoy when killed. Police have no suspects but investigation points to rival fraternity Akhro in which it has a huge following in the barangay.

Police Inspector Baguio said the three men were drinking and had transferred to a nearby shanty that previously served as a pigpen when it started to rain. As alleged, a hooded man wearing a jacket suddenly emerged from the dark and shot Anlocotan several times. Ouano and Undoy fled, failing to get a glimpse of Anlocotan's attacker. Baguio said Ouano and Undoy are yet to execute their statement but they initially said they do not have enemies in the area that could have triggered the killing.

"Wala silay laing nakita nga kontra. Kaatbang nga gang ra gyud ilang nakita," Baguio said. Baguio said Anlocotan sustained several gunshot wounds on the head. Fourteen empty shells and two slugs were found. Police said the gunman could have used a 9mm pistol.

Sources within the Tau Gamma community said that two weeks ago members were told to be extra careful because of allegations that Akrho was allegedly planning to kill someone from Tau Gamma to serve as a "halad (sacrifice)" for its anniversary.

But Richard Buscaino Akrho's regional president who was reached through his mobile phone last night quickly denied his fraternity had anything to do with the killing by saying " Oy hindi kami yon," stressing his group is busy preparing for its anniversary.

He said the activities started with a convention last Saturday where the organization's constitution and bylaws were reviewed. An Akrho Olympics was held yesterday at a beach in Lapu-Lapu City. A motorcade in the morning and a bloodletting activity would culminate in a party later this afternoon.

He said after the convention last Saturday with Mayor Tomas Osmena as guest speaker they all went home because they had to wake up early for the Olympics yesterday because the distance from the city to Lapu-Lapu City had to be considered.

Busacaino said Akrho does not create trouble. He said they are expecting a big turn out of participants in this morning's motorcade. Akrho claims a membership of more than 10, 000 in Cebu while Tau Gamma said it has about 3,000.

For visibility, the City Police Office is sending mobile patrols in areas where the motorcade will pass by.

Animosity between Akrho and Tau Gamma in Cebu started some 15 years ago and this remains unresolved despite the signing of several peace covenants.
