PEOPLE PLACES - Flor Ynclino - The Freeman

On the night Carlos and Mariquita Yeung were to host a despedida (farewell party) dinner for the volunteers and doctors of Filipino-Chinese Friendship Medical Mission, there was a heavy downpour. But this did not dampen the spirits of the hosts and the honorees. No matter what, the affair had to go on as scheduled.

Enjoying the dinner held at Villa Mariquita, the Chinese volunteers, about 60 of them plus the locals, was headed by Dr. Han Kai. From Manila were Dr. James Joaquino and Dr. Billy Go who helped Dr. Han Kai in operating the 60 children with cleft lips and palates.

At any rate, the very successful medical mission of the Chinese from China was held at the North General Hospital (one of Cebu Doctor`s Hospital) in Barangay Talamban, Cebu City. Coordinating with the Chinese mission was the Mariquita Salimbangon Yeung Charitable Foundation, Inc. headed by Dr. Boyet Quitevis and Dr. Vivina Chiu.

Albeit we had difficulty communicating with the Chinese nationals, their sponsor, Mrs. Wendy Cheung said, they might come back next year to do service to the Filipino people through their operation of the cleft lips and palates for indigent children.
