What are birthmarks composed of?  Will mine go away?

Birthmarks are present at birth or immediately after. Dark birthmarks are usually composed of deposition of melanin underneath the skin. White birthmarks show lack of melanin. Red birthmarks on the other hand, show increased blood vessels at some level of the skin.

Most birthmarks are harmless and aside from cosmetic concerns, they do not necessitate removal.  Some birthmarks do go away as the child grows older.  There are lasers that are specific for each type of birthmark.  Keep in mind that it takes a lot of sessions (maybe 8 to10) until the marks disappear. Make sure you have a PDS derma performing the tricky laser procedures and with an FDA approved machine.  Unwanted side effects can be avoided by using proper machine settings and good post procedure care.

What can I apply as first aid cream to minor cuts?

Dear Arnold,

Paper cuts, abrasions, scraped skins from accidents at home or at work are experienced by everyone. What is important is to clean it with mild soap and water immediately.  You can apply an antibiotic ointment such as mupirocin, bacitracin, fusidic acid etc., but not steroids.

Equally important is to avoid using irritating or abrasive chemicals on the particular area. This means no scrubs, alcohol, vicks, white flower, hot water, salicylic acid-based solutions, sulfur-based soaps and the likes.

When in doubt, just leave it alone until you can see your doctor.
