What kids learn from pets

Justine Therese Juntilla - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Kids are at the time in their lives when everything is a discovery and an endless adventure. While children often play around and make little adventures with other kids, some prefer to have a pet to take care of and find comfort with.

Pets are not limited to just dogs and cats and while some pets can be really cute, not all animals are advisable for children.

It is important to do a little homework before pet shopping for the kids. First of all, a series of factors shall be considered before deciding to have a pet in the household. It is necessary to ask if the family, especially the little kid, is ready to have a pet.

Many studies have it that children develop good traits with pets. With proper parental supervision, it is noted, children develop a sense of responsibility from owning a pet. Also, owning a pet helps children grow at an emotional level.

"Pet Place," an online source for pet information, carries an article about the things pets can teach children.

Communication

Kids learn cues from their pets to indicate feelings. This helps to develop a non-verbal communication skill, making the kids mindful of other people's body positions, gestures and expressions.

Empathy

Children would want to connect with their pets. By being attuned and constantly in check with their pets' feelings, kids develop a sense of curiosity and sensitivity. This leads the kids to be naturally curious and more engaging to other people, as well as more considerate, too.

Nurturing Skills

As they learn how to take care of pets, kids also become eager to take care and nurture other people.

Confidence

Pets help develop unconditional acceptance in children. The kids acquire a sense of confidence and learn not to be judgmental of those around them.

Resilience

Kids learn to be comfortable with others through their pets. They become more open to the love of the people around them. This helps them better deal with tough times and emotional hurdles, feeling that they are not alone.  (FREEMAN)
