How to survive the Gabii sa Kabilin

Johnlery Padero /RAFI - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Bought a ticket to the Gabii sa Kabilin tomorrow night? Here are some tips on how to survive one of Cebu's most awaited arts and heritage event:

Eat.

Gabii sa Kabilin runs from 6 p.m. until midnight tomorrow, May 30, or for a good six hours, you need to have food in your stomach. Never fear, however, because for just a few bucks, there is food available in select participating sites and museums like the Plaza Parian and the Casa Gorordo Museum.

Comfort before fashion.

If you are planning to flaunt some designer clothes or wear your favorite high heels, wedges or flip-flops, better think again. Gabii sa Kabilin involves walking, a great deal of it. So better don your most comfortable yet classy clothes and shoes. This will make your adventure more enjoyable as you are in your most comfy outfit.

Go handy dandy.

Carrying heavy bags and bulky cameras is a hassle. Bring only the essentials like a bottle of water, a hanky, smart phone, some meds, and a handy camera. And with today's unpredictable weather, bring an umbrella, just in case it rains.

Water overload.

Thirst is an enemy during the Gabii sa Kabilin so do not forget to bring a bottle of water.

Health is wealth.

Do not over-exert and put your health at risk.  Although excitement may get the better of you, remember not to exhaust yourself or force yourself to go beyond your limit.

Precious ticket.

Be sure to always bring with you your ticket.  It is your gate pass to all participating museums, the tartanilla ride, and the Gabii sa Kabilin buses. Keep it in your safest yet easy-to-access pocket.

The more, the merrier.

Life is most colorful and fun with family and friends. This also goes for the Gabii sa Kabilin. It is better to tour around the 35 participating sites, eating different delicacies, and learning new things with your barkada or with your family.

Don't rush.

There are 35 participating heritage sites and museums and although it would be great if you can visit all, you have to remember that for you to get the whole experience, you must not zip through each museum or heritage site. Take your time. The Gabii sa Kabilin is not a race but an opportunity to know more about the past. Anyway, there is always the next year!
