Mothers Day

Kuya Ramon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Being orphans, the kittens known as Blackfoot, Whitefang and Stripe never met their mother, but just because they were orphans didn’t mean that they never experienced motherly love and affection.

With the constant care of “Hi, I’m Jen, How May I Help You?”, the convenience store attendant who took care of them since they were little kittens, the three knew what a mother’s love is.

Since Mother’s Day was near, they decided to give “Hi, I’m Jen, How May I Help You?” something special, a token showing how much they valued her as their “mom”.

But as the three kittens had finally agreed on what Mother’s Day gift to give to “Hi, I’m Jen, How May I Help You?”, Blackfoot asked an intriguing question.

“Why can’t everyday be Mother’s Day?” he asked out loud.

Stripe, the smartest of the three, saw the wisdom in Blackfoot’s question.

“Indeed, why can’t everyday be Mother’s Day?” he thought to himself.

Well aware that they won’t find the answer to that question on their own, they went to Brad, the world’s smartest rat, asking him why everyday can’t be Mother’s Day.

“You ask a very interesting question, little kittens,” said Brad, “one which even the “founder” of Mother’s Day is known to have asked, one way or another.”

“How do you mean Brad?” asked Stripe.

“Yeah,” said Whitefang, “if this person “founded” Mother’s Day, then she could’ve decided to make it an everyday thing, not just something we celebrate once a year.”

“Oh its not like that, ‘fang,” said Brad. “Its like this: one not often talked about aspect of Mother’s Day is how its “founder” eventually came to be one of the people against it.”

After hearing Brad’s words the three kittens thought about it for a bit.

After a few minutes, Stripe finally says “That kinda doesn’t make sense Brad! Why would Mother’s Day’s founder go against the celebration she started?”

Seeing that the three kittens were more confused than before, Brad decided to tell them the story behind Mother’s Day.

“It’s like this little kittens, a woman named Anna Jarvis is noted to be the “founder” of Mother’s Day.”

“A long time ago, in 1905, Anna’s mom passed away that year, and she decided to memorialize her good deeds.”

“Through a lot of hard work and effort, Anna’s vision to memorialize her mother and all the mothers in the world came to be, with the second Sunday of May set as Mother’s Day.”

“However, as the years went by, Anna noticed how commercialized the celebration had become.”

“From Mother’s Day Salad specials in restaurants to Mother’s Day candies, treats and chocolates, Anna knew that buying a mother something once a year wasn’t the point of Mother’s Day”

“To Anna, Mother’s Day isn’t about giving things, but is a day when people honor mothers in the truest sense of the word.”

After hearing Brad’s explanation, the three kittens realized that what they had planned to give to “Hi, I’m Jen, How May I Help You?” on Mother’s Day wasn’t enough.

They decided, all on their own, to celebrate each day as Mother’s Day doing what they can to be of help to “Hi, I’m Jen, How May I Help You”, their “mom”, in any way possible. (FREEMAN)
