UP Cebu harvests best artworks

CEBU, Philippines - In celebration of the National Arts Month, the University of the Philippines Cebu recently held the Jose T. Joya 38TH Exhibit and 37TH Competition at the Art Center of SM City Cebu. Organized by the UP Fine Arts Students Organization (FASO) and supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), this year proved to be another milestone for the Fine Arts Program of the Arts and Humanities cluster.

 

   The event began way back in 1976 when National Artist for visual arts Jose T. Joya was Dean of the College of Fine Arts in UP Diliman. Realizing the great potentials of talented youth from the Visayas region, he supported and initiated the establishment of a Fine Arts Program in UP Cebu. Towards the end of that year, the students exhibited their works in public, primarily showcasing their ability to visually express in diverse art genre. A year later, the exhibit became a competition in honor of Jose T. Joya.

   This year, 53 wall-bound artworks in various media and theme created by students enrolled in the Studio Arts and Product Design programs wowed the three jurors, namely: Cebuana Film Maker Joanna Vasquez Arong, Director and Chief Curator of Sugbu Chinese Heritage Museum JV Castro and UP Cebu Fine Arts Alumni and Joya Awardee Jayboy Aterrado.

  

This year’s winners:

 1st Prize: “Fairy Tale” By: Sebastian Penayes III

 2nd Prize: “ Sympathy for the Callous” By: Jesus Codeniera

 3rd Prize: “Intimacy” by Angelo Arcaya

“Island Girl” By: Lhee Isabel Taneo

“Kamatayon” By: Faye Masecampo

“Ang Cyclop sa UP” By: Wyndell Remonde

“Bully Proof” By: Jayson Bacunador

“Synesthesia” By: Marvie Maria Gasataya

“Eli, Eli Lema Sabachthani” By: Kevin Cabrera

“Man, Are you OK?” By: Raul Bubuli, Jr.

  

   Apart from receiving medals and cash prizes, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd  prize winners will be duly recognized by UP Cebu in a special program and the artworks will be part of the university’s art collection.

   The Fine Arts program of the University of the Philippines is one of its flagship courses offering Studio Arts and Product Design.
