A Grandma's Story

- Mrs. Ellasim P. Saballa -

CEBU, Philippines - I want to share with you a story about my grandson, Dale, who at the age of 10 years old, demonstrated his love and concern for his Lola. Three years ago when he was barely 7 years old, they lived near us. Their house was adjacent to ours. He usually went inside my room and we exchanged stories, especially at night. One time, he requested something from me - that when time comes that I and his Lolo were already in heaven, he would own our small house, so he could renovate it. He expressed that he wants to be an architect like his Dad someday and then he can put all his cars there.

That was the wish of a young and innocent boy three years ago. Now, they have moved to a better place, a beautiful three-storey house overlooking the city. But once in a while, he would drop by and never fails to give me gifts, especially if there is a special occasion, like my birthday, Valentine’s day, Mother’s day, Christmas and New Year. He gave me a bouquet of flowers, chocolates and also foods fit for me because I’m a diabetic. On one occasion, I received a complete make-up set. (Maybe he asked those things from his mom.)

Just recently, I got sick because of non-stop vomiting and weakness. While we were in the sala waiting for my son, his Dad, to bring me to the hospital, I still managed to joke to Dale and said, “This house is all yours now.” I wanted to see his reaction. I glanced and saw his bowed head as he wiped his tears with his T-shirt. I held his hand and told him to just pray for me and he nodded. His father said that when they went home and when they were having their dinner, Dale suddenly burst into tears and cried, saying: “I don’t want the house, what I want is Lola!”

When I finally went home from the hospital, my other apo, a six year old girl named Alyssa, went straight to my room and greeted me. “How are you Lola?” I answered, “I’m okay na.” I told her that Dale was so sad during the time that I was sick. So I asked her if she cried also. She said, “Yes, but in my mind only. I just cried inside.”

Days after I was discharged from the hospital, my very handsome and smart apo from my other son came and visitied me. He’s Luigi, 5 yr. old. He knocked and entered my room and handed me an envelope. Then he hugged me tight and kissed me, I was overwhelmed with joy when I saw him. I told him that I missed him and that I loved him so much. We said goodbye while his Dad waited in the car. His dad was always in the hospital during my confinement. I opened the envelope and there was a big amount of cash for my medicines.

So there’s truth to the saying that our grandchildren seem to be much closer to our hearts than our very own children. If we spend time to care for them and treat them well, they value your presence and unconditionally show their love for us. Our grandchildren give us fun, joy and laughter and keep us company in our old age. I’m so lucky and grateful to have them in my life.
