Joey Marquez on adjusting to today’s comedy

Syril Gemida - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Veteran actor Joey Marquez shared that being a comedian today comes with more responsibility and accountability, as the current generation is more sensitive compared to his early years in the business.

“Noong araw walang barrier, walang mao-offend dahil alam nilang joke. Walang masasaktan dahil comedy. Eh ngayon kailangan mong pag-isipan lahat ng dadaanan mong line na hindi makaka-offend,” said Joey during a virtual conference for the TV5 comedy sitcom “Oh My Korona.”

“Kailangan baguhin mo yung style ng konti depende din kung sinong manonood, kunwari mga bata o may edad.”

Being extra-careful with his jokes these days is just one of many efforts he’s made to meet the evolving demands of society and television audiences.

Joey is grateful to be part of “Oh My Korona” mostly because he realized that he still has room for new learnings. He said being with the young generation of comedians in the show gave him new discoveries to improve his comedic skills.

In the sitcom, Joey portrays Louie, a former actor who is the manager of Sunrise Talent Agency. When lead star Maja Salvador’s character Lavinia moves to the boarding house she inherited from her mom, Louie saw potential in her and wants to recruit her as one of Sunrise’s artists.

“Oh My Korona” is a project of Cignal entertainment and Crown Artist Management that revolves around the lives of five individuals whose dreams are to become professional celebrities. Also in the cast are RK Bagatsing, Pooh, Christine Samson, Jessie Salvador, Kakai Bautista, Guel Espina, Thou Reyes, and Queenay.
