'The Doll Life’ fascinates US mainstream

CEBU, Philippines - Myx TV, the only English-language multicultural Asian American entertainment network in the United States, premiered its newest original series, “The Doll Life” October 20 at 8/7 central and online October 21, exclusively on Myx TV’s website (http://myxtv.com).

“The Doll Life” is a spinoff of last year’s hit docu-series, “I’m Asian American and…” and the show details what happens behind-the-scenes at the cutting-edge Japanese street fashion brand, Dolldelight. Headed by owner and designer Cyril Lumboy, Dolldelight specializes in the popular sub-culture of Japanese “Lolita fashion” otherwise known as “Dolly style.”

Each episode of “The Doll Life” will feature a day in the life of Cyril and her models as they navigate the complicated world of Lolita fashion and culture. From runway shows to pop-culture conventions, cameras follow Cyril and her models as they deal with the high-pressure and high-profile situations unique to the fashion industry, where a sense of humor is key because catfights are common, resentments can build, and over-the-top outbursts are the norm.

Leading up to its premiere, the show was featured on prominent mainstream media outlets like Forbes, Right This Minute, Daily Dot, and Fansided among others.

In Forbes Magazine’s article, they examined the show from the angle of a small business. According to writer Lauren Orsini, “The Doll Life is about fashion foremost, but also about business.” The Daily Dot and Right This Minute interviewed cast members Ashphord Jacoway and Stephanie Sandmeier.

Writes Aja Romano from The Daily Dot, “Now their hobby has gotten them a stint on reality TV, and a chance to take their passion for fashion to a whole new audience.”

“‘The Doll Life’ is an up-close and in-depth look into this rarely-seen fashion subculture, but more than dolly fashion, it’s about the relatable characters and their personal lives as they build this top fashion brand,” said Miguel Santos, General Manager of Myx TV.

“Lolita fashion” is a form of Japanese street fashion that is based on clothing and general aesthetics of the Rococo and Victorian eras. Extreme attention placed on the material and manufacture of garments that are cut modestly and commonly include long skirts, covered shoulders, and petticoats with the end result being that models look like living dolls.

The style has expanded greatly beyond Japan and has now found a home in the United States.

The “living dolls” of the “The Doll Life” lead double lives; students, massage therapists, and restaurant servers by day, but on the weekends and during conventions they come alive as they let their alter egos shine on the catwalk. Over the course of the series, viewers get to know the personalities behind the dresses and will see the dramatic ups and downs of a business catering to this worldwide community of fans.

“The Doll Life” is produced by Thirsty Tiger Television with Valerie Chow and Stephen Goetsch, serving as executive producers, along with executive producer and executive in charge of production for Myx TV, Miguel Santos.

“The Doll Life” joins the lineup of original shows on Myx TV that includes award-winning programming such as “Eat Your Words,” “Bagged,” “Call to Cosplay,” and a variety of film and music programming. (PR)(FREEMAN)
