More Time For Dexter

CHANNEL SURFING - Althea Lauren Ricardo -

I’ve finally caught up with the third season of the Showtime crime series Dexter, something that began late last year and took its long sweet time to finish. I started with watching episodes that can be found online, on YouTube and similar websites, and I would have mustered up the patience to download them first and watch them, if not for the work I have that’s continuously piling up. That and the fact that watching streaming videos and such are not allowed at work, where I enjoy unlimited, high-speed Internet access.

The season currently being shown on FoxCrime Asia is the second season, and, being shown on prime time TV—in Asia, to boot—it has plenty of cuts. Dexter fanatics would agree that it’s not just the same, without all the (pardon the pun) juicy parts. Well, thank goodness for DVD and Blu-ray technology—the complete Season 3 was just released last month. But wait, there’s more! Season 4 is set to premiere on September 27. Yes, you read that right. We don’t have too long to wait!

Funnily enough, despite my extreme lack of free time, I managed to watch episodes one to twelve in one weekend and still meet all my commitments. I’ve done the same with all seven Harry Potter books. This has led me to conclude that the adage is true: When there is a will, there is a way.

Dexter Season 3 is made more exciting by two major developments. First, Dexter Morgan, the blood spatter specialist slash serial killer of serial killers, finds his first best friend, assistant district attorney Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits as you’ve never seen him before), who catches him committing a crime, discovers what he does, and not only accepts him for who he is, but also becomes his first partner in crime. They first meet when the Miami Metro Police Department Dexter works for is investigating the killing of Oscar Prado, Miguel’s baby brother, which Dexter himself committed in self-defense.

The second development is Dexter’s impending—and unplanned—fatherhood, the idea of which terrifies him at first. Eventually, however, triggered by the threat of a convicted pedophile who begins stalking Dexter’s girlfriend Rita’s “tween” daughter, Dexter realizes that even if he cannot feel love and other emotions, he has what it takes to be a good father, most specifically, a protector. So he asks Rita to marry him. As they plan their wedding, Miguel turns from friend to foe, engaging Dexter in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

The last episode is a chilling portent of what’s to come in Season 4: While Dexter and Rita enjoy their first dance as bride and groom, Dexter’s broken arm begins to bleed and tiny drops of blood fall on the happy bride’s pristine, white bridal gown.

But wait, there’s more! John Lithgow is joining the cast as Walter Simmons, a mild-mannered suburbanite who is living a dual life as one of America’s most prolific serial killers. Dubbed the “Trinity Killer,” he kills in threes and has evaded capture for three decades. Dexter tracks him down even as he leads his own more complicated double life as husband to Rita, stepfather to two kids, and father-to-be.

For a glimpse of the season to come, look for the Dexter 4.1, which was leaked online last month.
