Two piano masters to perform in SM northwing

-

Pianists and pedagogues Reynaldo Reyes and Ingrid Sala Santamaria will perform live at the Atrium of SM Northwing on August 3, 2008, Sunday, beginning 5pm. Catch them in their classical concert performance and music education presentation.

Ingrid Sala Santamaria was born in Cebu City. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Battig Piano School in Cebu under the expertise of her Pilar. She also studied in New York. The De La Salle University in Manila also conferred her the Doctor of Music degree in Music Education, honoris causa in 2006.

She now chairs the Salvador and Pilar Sala Foundation and spearheaded a ten-year development program which then produced the Cebu Youth Symphony Orchestra in 1995, which has now evolved into the Peace Philharmonic Philippines in 2000. She also received the Hall of Fame award from the Performing Arts League in Florida, and one of the 100 Most Notable Cebuanos of the Century award. These are just two of the numerous local, national and international awards received by Santamaria.

Reynaldo Reyes, born in Alitagtag, Batangas, also obtained his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Sto. Tomas Conservatory of Music. Through a French government scholarship, he was able to study at the Conservatoire Nationale Superieure de Musique de Paris. He was also a scholar of the Philippine Promotion Foundation. He was also a recipient of other prestigious awards such as the Ten Outstanding Young Men award, Golden Cross Awards, the Musician of the Year award from the University of the Philippines, among many others.

Their repertoire includes Sergei Rachmaninoff’s (1873-1943) Rhasody on a theme by Paganini, Op. 43. A piece for a virtuoso pianist, its famous and beautiful 18th Variation was made the theme of the movie “Somewhere in Time” and the Philippine television series “Gulong ng Palad.”

Another is Felix Mendelssohn—Bartholdy’s (1809-1847) Concerto No. 1 in g minor, Op. 25. This very effective work has all of Mendelssohn’s virtues—idiomatic piano writing with a great deal of technical variety, mastery of design, and expert scoring for the combination of solo instrument and orchestra played without a break.

Camille Saint-Saens’s (1835-1921) Concerto No. 2 in g minor, Op. 22 is also featured. In this piece, displayed are all of Saint-Saens’ qualities as a composer—skillful workmanship, clear texture, invariable effectiveness.

The Filipino pieces “Mayon Fantasy” and “Souvenir de Filipinas” by Buencamino and Santiago will be played in all programs by Santamaria and Reyes respectively.

Catch these two performers at The Northwing on August 3 as they bring to Cebu the Romantic Piano Concerto Journey Tour # 16. Admission is free. For seat reservations please call 233-0452 or email [email protected]
